Passion For Pattern

I always find it hard to explain what it is that I do as a job to people who are new to my work. First & foremost I’m a Print & Pattern Designer, however I’ve been called an Illustrator for the various commissions I’ve worked on, an Author because of my books (although they are design books...). I’ve also worked on six online courses with my sister Make it in Design, four of which would make endless books (we’ve actually said no to various book deals over the years!). I’d say a Teacher description is more fitting for my e-courses & more recently the title Stylist has been thrown into the mix & somehow figuring out how to be a Manager/Director for my two companies. However surface pattern design really is 'my thing'.

Over the years I’ve worked on patterns for almost every application in various countries, but I definitely think anything with my designs printed on at a larger scale is what excites me the most as they are just so in your face! I love how surface pattern has the ability to bring a new dynamic to an application. It not only provides movement, energy & decoration, it also brings the magic (in my opinion).

It’s hard to put into words how much I love patterns so here’s a pattern mash-up instead featuring two of my wallpaper designs & a cushion design. (Photography by Kimmy from Struth Photography). I recently chatted with Holly from my Make it in Design team about the title ‘Patternologist’ & I think I kind of like it for the new site I’m working on. I’m so passionate about patterns & a bit of a creative pain but making patterns makes me happy!
