Studio News – MIID Photography Shoot!

Last week we were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Holly Booth on a very exciting photography project for The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design – details to be revealed later!

In the meantime here is some more info about the very talented Holly and what inspires her which you can also read about in Issue 7 of MOYO Magazine.

Holly is a professional photographer specialising in working with independent makers, designers and shops; helping them to capture the beautiful items they produce in a manner that does them justice.

When did you discover your passion for photography?

My interest in photography started at an early age because my dad was always into it. I picked up a camera myself in my early teens and totally fell in love with it. I studied photography at college and then did a degree in Commercial Photography before going on to set up my own business during my final year of university.

What do you love most about being behind the camera?

I think the best part is working hard to set up a shoot and seeing all aspects of it – location, props etc – come together to create a final image that looks just like I imagined in my head. It’s even more satisfying when the client is on a shoot with me and they love the images they see on my camera screen.

Can you tell us a bit about your process for seeking out beauty and capturing it on camera?

It’s difficult to pin down exactly what makes a particular set up work in a photograph. At the risk of sounding pretentious, I genuinely believe that you have to have a bit of an eye for spotting what looks good and what doesn’t.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I get a lot of my inspiration from Pinterest and I spend a lot of time looking at interiors and décor. I like to see what colours, patterns and styles are on trend and then incorporate these into my work. I’m also in awe of the amazing ladies at A Beautiful Mess. They’re big role models in terms of inspiring me to run my own business and stay creative.

What would be your top tips for anyone who wants to be a successful photographer?

I always find this a tricky one to answer, but I think you should always trust your gut instincts, work hard and whatever you do, don’t compare yourself to other photographers. That last one might seem hard, but it’s really important. Also – and I struggle to do this myself sometimes – remember that it’s okay to take time out now and again otherwise you’ll burn out.
